Following the discovery of explosives near gas infrastructure, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán convened a defense council, prompting a pointed reaction from Radosław Sikorski.
Sikorski Comments on Orbán’s Actions
Radosław Sikorski reacted to Viktor Orbán’s announcement regarding the convening of a security council following the discovery of explosive materials near gas infrastructure. He shared Orbán’s post and briefly commented, stating “Suspiciously convenient timing.”
Possible Sabotage of Balkan Stream Pipeline
Sikorski’s comment responds to Orbán’s actions after reports of a possible sabotage attempt on the Balkan Stream pipeline. Orbán previously announced the convening of the defense council and stated that the military would be deployed to protect the TurkStream pipeline.
The Hungarian Prime Minister also mentioned sabotage in the Serbian Vojvodina region and accused Ukraine of years-long attempts to cut off Europe from Russian raw material supplies.
Orbán’s Emergency Council and Upcoming Elections
Orbán convened the extraordinary defense council after Serbian authorities reported finding powerful explosives near gas infrastructure bordering Hungary. The incident has sparked further controversy, occurring days before the Hungarian parliamentary elections on April 12th.
Orbán’s camp suggests sabotage, while the opposition questions the timing and credibility of the incident. Currently, Fidesz, Orbán’s party, is losing over 20 percentage points in polls to Péter Magyar of the Tisza opposition.
Serbian Intelligence on Explosives and Potential Sabotage
According to earlier information from the Serbian side, Duro Jovanić, Director of VBA (Security Information Agency), spoke of a large quantity of explosives, detonators, and tools that could have been used for sabotage. He also stated that the services had prior information about a “person from a migrant group, militarily trained,” who may have been planning to sabotage gas infrastructure.
Jovanić reported that markings on the seized materials indicated they were produced in the USA, but clarified that this does not determine the perpetrator.
