A former U.S. ambassador believes Poland could gain from a potential reshuffling of U.S. forces in Europe amid Donald Trump’s criticisms of NATO.
NATO Crisis and Trump’s Demands
Former U.S. diplomat Fried believes NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is working to navigate the alliance through a crisis, attempting to find a “narrow path” to address Trump’s concerns without triggering a complete breakdown.
Fried stated Rutte is “tirelessly constructive” and avoids engaging with Trump’s rhetoric, recognizing that Trump’s influence won’t last forever. He believes Trump hasn’t yet acted on his threats to dismantle the alliance.
Shifting U.S. Forces to Eastern Europe
A potential compromise, according to Fried, would involve relocating U.S. forces from bases in Germany, Italy, and Spain – countries that Trump has criticized for their stance on Iran – to nations like Poland and Romania.
Fried said he would “accept that offer,” noting it would be politically advantageous for Trump due to his good relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Romania’s willingness to cooperate regarding Iran.
Trump’s Frustrations and Internal Divisions
Fried suggests Trump’s anger towards NATO stems partly from frustration over the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and partly from the influence of individuals within his administration who “hate NATO” and hold Europe in contempt.
He also noted that these views are somewhat balanced by a “Reaganite” faction, represented by figures like U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matt Whitaker.
Poland’s Position and Increased U.S. Presence
Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the importance of the U.S. to NATO, stating, “There is no NATO without the USA, but there is also no American military power without its participation in NATO.”
Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed confidence in continuing efforts to increase the U.S. military presence in Poland, regardless of the situation in the Middle East.
