Polish authorities are investigating reports of smuggling balloons appearing in the Warmian-Masurian and Podlaskie voivodeships this week.
Balloon Sightings Reported in Two Voivodeships
Smuggling balloons have been observed near Ełk, Giżycko, and Bartoszyce in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, according to RMF FM. Police also report similar objects near Oleck.
A new report also came from the Podlaskie Voivodeship, with a balloon discovered in Łopusze. Police received notification of the incident around 6:00 AM.
Police Warn Public, Issue Appeal
Police are warning the public and urging anyone who spots suspicious packages, particularly balloons with attached payloads, to avoid approaching or touching them.
It is currently unknown if all the balloons have landed. Reports indicate the balloons are light-colored spheres with black packages containing illegal cigarettes.
Balloons Equipped with GPS Trackers
RMF FM reports that each balloon is typically equipped with a GPS receiver, allowing recipients of the contraband to locate where the payload landed.
Police are currently investigating the situation but have not yet released information on the exact number of balloons that crossed the border or whether all packages have been secured.
