Trump Accuses Iran of “Blackmail” Amidst Strait of Hormuz Negotiations

Former President Trump criticized Iran for attempting to “blackmail” the world with disruptions to shipping lanes, as a two-week ceasefire agreement takes effect.

US-Iran Ceasefire and the Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire, during which Iran pledged “safe passage” through the Strait of Hormuz, coordinated with its armed forces and subject to technical limitations. Iran’s coast guard warned any vessel attempting passage without permission would be “identified and destroyed.”

Lebanon Excluded from Ceasefire

The status of Lebanon remains a point of contention. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated Iran and the US, along with their allies, agreed to an immediate ceasefire “everywhere, including Lebanon.” However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted the agreement does not include Lebanon, where Israeli forces are engaged with Hezbollah.

Following Israeli attacks on Lebanon, Iranian news agency Fars reported tankers traveling through Lebanese waters were halted, citing a “violation of the ceasefire.”

Strait of Hormuz Restrictions

Marine Traffic data indicates ship transits through the Strait of Hormuz were limited to eight bulk carriers and container ships destined for Iran on Thursday. The waterway remained closed to other vessels, a significant reduction from the typical 135 ships passing daily.

Concerns Over Restricted Access

Sultan Al Jaber, Director General of ADNOC, reported approximately 230 oil tankers were awaiting departure and appealed for the “unconditional” opening of the Strait of Hormuz. He stated, “Access is restricted, conditional, and controlled.”

Al Jaber emphasized that Iran has made it clear passage through the strait is dependent on permission, conditions, and political pressure, stating it is not “freedom of navigation.”

Further Negotiations in Islamabad

Pakistan’s Prime Minister invited US and Iranian delegations to Islamabad for further negotiations, scheduled for Saturday, April 11th. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated the goal is to “reach a final agreement resolving all disputes.”

Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope for a successful outcome, while attendees include US Vice President J.D. Vance, Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and envoy Steve Witkoff.
