Hungary Sees Record Voter Turnout by 3 PM

Hungary held parliamentary elections on Sunday, with voter turnout reaching 66.01% by 3 PM, surpassing previous records.

Record Turnout Reported

Voter turnout in Hungary reached a record 66.01% by 3 PM on Sunday, according to the National Election Office (NVI). At 1 PM, turnout stood at 54.14%.

As of 3 PM, 4,968,713 people had cast their votes. This surpasses the final turnout figures from 1990 (65.11%), 2010 (64.02%), and 2014 (61.24%).

Registered Voters and Voting Methods

A total of 7,527,742 people were registered to vote in the election. A record number – over 90,000 – registered to vote at Hungarian foreign representations.

The number of voters using postal voting also reached a record high, nearing 224,000.

Parliamentary Election Details

Hungarians are electing 199 deputies to the National Assembly, Hungary’s unicameral parliament. 106 are elected in single-member constituencies, and 93 are chosen from national party lists.

Voting Rights

Eligible voters in Hungary can cast two votes: one for a candidate in their constituency and another for a party list or national minority list. Voters abroad cast only one vote, for a national list.

Key Figures Have Voted

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Tisza Party Chairman Péter Magyar, and President Tamás Sulyok have already cast their votes.

Orbán’s Statement on Turnout

Orbán commented on the high turnout on Facebook, stating, “So many people are voting. This means one thing: if we want to protect Hungary’s security, no patriot can stay at home! Only Fidesz! Upwards, to victory!”

Vote Counting and Expected Results

Vote counting will begin immediately after polling stations close at 7 PM, with preliminary results expected around 8 PM, including the percentage of votes tallied.
