Trump Threatens Strait of Hormuz Blockade, Putin Offers Middle East Mediation

Following failed U.S.-Iran talks in Pakistan, Donald Trump announced plans to block the Strait of Hormuz, prompting a Russian offer to mediate.

U.S.-Iran Talks Fail to Yield Agreement

Over 20 hours of U.S.-Iranian negotiations in Pakistan concluded without a breakthrough. While Trump stated many issues were agreed upon and the talks were cordial, Iran demonstrated no willingness to abandon its nuclear ambitions, which he deemed the central problem, rendering “all points” irrelevant.

Unofficial reports from Iranian news agency Tasnim indicated a dispute over “excessive demands from the American side, especially regarding the Strait of Hormuz.”

Trump Announces Strait of Hormuz Blockade

Trump declared that the “world’s best Navy” would immediately begin blocking all ships attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that eventually, all vessels would be able to transit freely, but currently, the threat of Iranian mining poses an obstacle.

U.S. Condemns Iranian “Blackmail” and Threatens Retaliation

The U.S. President characterized this as blackmail against the world and asserted that “leaders of countries, and especially the United States of America, will never be blackmailed.” He announced the participation of other nations – without specifying which – in the blockade and the commencement of U.S. military mine-clearing operations.

Trump also warned that any vessel paying illegal transit fees to Iran would be pursued and intercepted by the U.S.

Threats of Force Against Iran

Trump stated that any Iranian who attacks Americans or peaceful vessels will be “blown to pieces,” referencing past losses suffered by Iranian leaders and the country during conflict. He suggested further destruction of Iranian assets, stating the U.S. military is prepared to “finish off what remains of Iran” at the appropriate time.

Putin Offers Mediation in the Middle East

The Kremlin announced on April 12th that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian held a phone conversation discussing the U.S.-Iran talks. Putin expressed Russia’s readiness to continue supporting efforts for a political and diplomatic resolution and to mediate a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, maintaining active contact with regional partners.
