Polish authorities are reinvestigating the 2001 discovery of a newborn girl’s body found in a roadside ditch near Kazimierzowo, hoping for a breakthrough after 25 years.
Case Reopened Under “Archive X” Initiative
Police revisited the case in February as part of the “Archive X – We Don’t Stop Searching!” campaign, initially reported in 2001 on January 21st near Kazimierzowo in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
The newborn was wrapped in a blanket with a pillow nearby.
Initial Investigation Stalled
Officers and forensic technicians immediately secured evidence at the scene, and a tracking dog followed a scent trail towards Adamowo, but the trail ended abruptly.
The child was determined to have been born alive and died within hours from exposure and lack of medical attention, likely delivered outside of a hospital.
Unsolved for Over 25 Years
The case was previously closed due to the inability to identify those responsible for the child’s death, but remains open in spirit, according to an anonymous police official from the Criminal Department of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Olsztyn.
The renewed investigation is driven by advancements in investigative methods and available tools over the past quarter-century.
Challenges in Identifying the Mother
The location of the discovery, along a major route connecting the Tricity area to the capital, complicates the investigation, as the mother may not have been a local resident.
Police aimed to broaden the reach of their appeal for information, leveraging modern communication methods.
Modern Technology Employed
Investigators revisited Kazimierzowo and Adamowo, interviewing residents who may recall the event or have knowledge of the child’s family.
Re-examined evidence underwent new analysis using modern technology unavailable at the time of the original investigation, allowing for a refined DNA profile.
DNA samples were collected from individuals mentioned in the original case files and are being compared against updated databases.
Hope for a Breakthrough
Police acknowledge the difficulty of the case, given the child’s age and tragic circumstances, and hope a single person with information will come forward.
One individual contacted police with information regarding a family living near the discovery site, but this lead did not yield a breakthrough.
