Initial results from Hungary’s parliamentary election show the opposition TISZA party leading with 50.3% of the vote, challenging Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz-KDNP coalition.
Early Results Show Shift in Hungarian Parliament
The opposition TISZA party has received 50.3% of the votes in Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Hungary, while the Fidesz-KDNP coalition garnered 41% according to the National Election Office (NVI) after counting 29.2% of votes cast for national party lists.
Partial results also indicate that the far-right Mi Hazank party has surpassed the 5% electoral threshold, receiving 6.1% of the votes.
Voter Turnout and Initial Reactions
By 6:30 PM, 77.8% of eligible voters had cast their ballots, totaling 5,856,515 people. Vote counting began immediately after polling stations closed at 7:00 PM.
Peter Magyar, the leader of the opposition Tisza party, appealed for calm and patience in a post-election speech, stating he was cautiously optimistic. Gergely Gulyas, the head of the Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s office, expressed confidence that his camp would secure a majority.
Election Details and Parliamentary Structure
Hungarians elected 199 deputies to the National Assembly (Orszaggyules), Hungary’s unicameral parliament. 106 are elected in single-member constituencies, and the remaining 93 are chosen from national party lists. In each constituency, the candidate with the most votes wins, even without a majority.
Cautious Optimism and Potential for Change
Despite being early in the vote-counting process, these results have generated “cautious optimism” within the opposition camp. Representatives are tempering expectations, citing the dynamic situation and the potential for votes from major urban centers – which typically arrive last – to influence the final outcome.
Record Turnout Signals Desire for Change
Sunday’s election, held on April 12, 2026, saw record voter turnout, which experts interpreted as a sign of strong mobilization among voters seeking change. If this trend continues, Hungary may be on the verge of a significant political realignment.
All eyes are now on Budapest as the country awaits the results from remaining electoral districts, which will ultimately determine the fate of Viktor Orbán’s government.
