Polish Prosecutors Reopen Investigation into 1992 Slayings of Jaroszewicz Family

The Krakow Prosecutor’s Office has filed an appeal against the Warsaw District Court’s 2022 acquittal of three suspects in the 1992 murders of former Polish Premier Piotr Jaroszewicz and his wife Alicja Solska-Jaroszewicz.

Appeal Filed Against Acquittal

The Krakow prosecutors are questioning the legitimacy of the original verdict, citing a number of procedural violations they believe occurred during the trial. They argue that these violations significantly impacted the court’s decision.

Origins of the Case

The case revolves around the nearly 33-year-old murders of Piotr Jaroszewicz and Alicja Solska-Jaroszewicz on the night of August 31 to September 1, 1992, along with the murder of another couple in Gdynia in 1991 and an attempted murder in 1993.

Background of the “Karate Gang”

At the start of the 1990s, the three men involved were part of an organized criminal group known as the “karate gang,” which, over the course of two years, committed at least 27 armed robberies and one murder across Poland, committing numerous other offenses against property as well.
