Polish Authorities Seek Clarification on Asylum for Ziobro and Romanowski in Hungary

Poland’s Justice Minister has requested Hungary confirm whether Zbigniew Ziobro and Marcin Romanowski have received asylum, amid ongoing legal proceedings.

Ziobro and Romanowski Face Criminal Charges in Poland

Zbigniew Ziobro and Marcin Romanowski are wanted by Polish law enforcement. Ziobro is accused of 26 crimes, including leading a criminal group, dereliction of duty, abuse of power, and misappropriation of public funds from the Justice Fund, intended for victims of crime.

Similar charges have been filed against Romanowski, who prosecutors allege participated in the aforementioned group and is suspected of 19 offenses.

Asylum Status Remains Unconfirmed

Ziobro and Romanowski reportedly sought asylum in Hungary to avoid prosecution. However, Hungarian authorities under Viktor Orbán have not confirmed this information.

Polish Minister Requests Information from Hungary

Waldemar Żurek, Poland’s Justice Minister, has requested the Hungarian Minister of Interior confirm whether both men have been granted refugee status and the dates of those decisions.

Concerns Over EU Law and Mutual Trust

If asylum is confirmed, the Polish Prosecutor General will request its revocation, arguing it could violate EU law and the principle of mutual trust between member states. This trust is based on adherence to EU law, the rule of law, and fundamental human rights.

Status of European Arrest Warrant Unclear

The status of the European Arrest Warrant (ENA) issued by a Polish court for Romanowski, sent to Hungary on February 26th, is unknown. Żurek has inquired with the Hungarian Minister of Justice about its processing.

Polish authorities deemed a previous response from Hungary, dated March 30, 2026, insufficient. Żurek also requested information on whether Romanowski has been granted refugee status.
