Israel and Lebanon Halt Fighting; Trump Announces Ceasefire

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire following conversations brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday.

Ceasefire Agreement Reached

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he had spoken with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, resulting in an agreement for a 10-day suspension of hostilities.

Fighting is to be paused at 5:00 PM Washington time (midnight in Lebanon, 11:00 PM in Poland).

Ongoing Conflict with Hezbollah

Israel has been engaged in conflict with Lebanese Hezbollah for a month and a half. This Shia group, supported by Iran, operates outside the control of the Lebanese government, which seeks its disarmament—a demand also echoed by Israel.

Roots of the Current Conflict

Hezbollah has fought with Israel for years, with the current escalation triggered by a U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran. A two-week ceasefire is currently in effect in the conflict with Iran.

Trump’s Announcement and Future Peace Efforts

Trump announced the ceasefire in Lebanon via a post on his Truth Social platform.

The American president added that his officials, including Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will work towards achieving a lasting peace between Israel and Lebanon.
