Former Village Heads May Qualify for Monthly Pension Boost

Polish pensioners who previously served as village heads (sołtys) may be eligible for a monthly benefit of over 300 zł, requiring only one document for proof.

Eligibility Requirements for the Village Head Pension Supplement

The supplemental pension for former village heads is intended to recognize individuals who served their communities, often without significant compensation, but with considerable responsibility. Simply holding the position in the past does not automatically guarantee eligibility; specific criteria must be met.

To qualify, individuals must fulfill all established requirements and provide documentation confirming their service. A conviction for a crime or fiscal offense related to their duties as a village head disqualifies applicants.

Legal Framework Governing the Benefit

The duties of village heads are defined by various legal acts, most notably the 1990 Act on Local Government, the May 26, 2023 Act on Cash Benefits for Serving as a Village Head, and amendments to these laws.

Scope of Village Head Responsibilities

Village head responsibilities are broad, encompassing representation of village residents, organizing village meetings, and implementing decisions made by the municipal council. Duties may also include collecting local taxes, such as agricultural or forestry taxes.

How to Apply for the Benefit

The benefit is granted upon application by an eligible individual, requiring the submission of documentation proving past service as a village head. This includes a certificate from the municipal office or other official documentation.

If the office lacks confirming documents, a denial of the certificate will be issued, which must be included with the application. In such cases, a personal declaration of service, confirmed by at least three residents from that period, can be submitted, under penalty of criminal liability for false statements.

Applications are submitted to the regional or local branch of the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund (KRUS) based on the pensioner’s place of residence. The benefit is approved and paid by the President of KRUS.

Benefit Amount and Indexation

The village head supplement is legally defined and subject to annual indexation. As of March 1, 2026, the amount is 373.67 zł gross per month.

KRUS Will Not Automatically Issue the Supplement

KRUS does not automatically grant the cash benefit for serving as a village head. Without an application and supporting documentation, the pension will remain at its current level. Therefore, individuals who previously served as village heads should verify their eligibility.
