Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki commented on recent political moves by the Law and Justice (PiS) party, noting a potential decline in voter support due to a hard-right turn.
Morawiecki Critiques PiS’s Radical Policies
Mateusz Morawiecki discussed the recent political actions of the Law and Justice party on Thursday, April 23rd, and referenced a conversation with party leader Jarosław Kaczyński. He emphasized a determination to move forward with their political agenda and offer constructive solutions for Polish citizens.
Morawiecki stated that if the right-wing focuses solely on identity politics, it will not achieve significant progress, and must appeal to a broader base.
Support Wanes After Rightward Turn
Morawiecki assessed that the PiS party’s radical policies have contributed to a decrease in its polling numbers. He believes a clear shift towards the radical right is not benefiting the party.
According to Morawiecki, a sharp turn to the right following the presidential elections proved to be an unfortunate political move, causing support to fall from an average of 31% to around 26% in polls – a 5 percentage point drop. He attributes this decline to the increasingly radical rhetoric within the political camp.
Seven-Hour Talks Lead to Compromise
Morawiecki and Kaczyński held a seven-hour meeting on the night of April 20-21st, resulting in a compromise, according to Kaczyński. The discussion centered on the ongoing divisions within PiS related to the establishment of the Rozwój Plus association, led by Morawiecki.
Stowarzyszenie Rozwój Plus and Party Membership
PiS authorities had previously announced that involvement in the association would preclude membership in the party, and those not leaving Rozwój Plus would not be included on PiS electoral lists. However, the meeting resulted in a decision to partially limit the association’s activities.
Kaczyński Agrees to a “Second Lung”
Morawiecki stated that during the conversation, Kaczyński agreed with the necessity of having a more aspirational and developmental approach, describing it as a “second lung” for the party. He questioned whether Kaczyński acknowledged his own error or was influenced by more radical elements within the party, but noted that a change is expected.
Kaczyński announced that the association’s activities would be conducted within the party structure, with members joining an Expert Council.
Turbulences Resolved, Path Forward Clear
Morawiecki concluded that despite conflicts, they were able to clarify communication issues with Kaczyński and reach an agreement. He reiterated their commitment to advancing their political agenda and proposing constructive solutions for the Polish people.
