Gunfire erupted during a White House Correspondents’ Association dinner Saturday evening, prompting President Trump’s evacuation and the arrest of a suspect.
President Trump Addresses Shooting Incident
President Donald Trump announced Saturday that the individual who opened fire during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner had been apprehended, praising the swift response of the Secret Service and law enforcement.
Trump was evacuated by the Secret Service during the shooting, which occurred in the lobby of the hotel. The suspect was armed with a shotgun, pistol, and multiple knives.
Evacuation and Initial Response
The shooting occurred shortly after the start of the White House Correspondents’ Association gala at the Hilton hotel in Washington. President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and other cabinet members were evacuated as the event was broadcast live on television.
Hundreds of journalists and politicians were present, with guests taking cover under tables in the ballroom.
Suspect in Custody, Trump’s Reaction
The suspect was taken into custody. President Trump later posted on his Truth Social account, reiterating the suspect’s apprehension and commending the Secret Service and law enforcement.
“What an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They were fast and courageous. The shooter was caught and I suggested: LET THE SHOW GO ON, but it will be completely directed by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision soon. Regardless of the decision, this evening will definitely be different than planned and we will just have to do it again. President DONALD J. TRUMP,” Trump wrote.
Condition of Attendees and Future Plans
Trump reported that the First Lady, Vice President, and all other cabinet members were “in excellent condition.” He stated that authorities requested the evacuation of the venue, which was immediately carried out.
Trump announced plans for a press conference at the White House and indicated the gala would be rescheduled.
Secret Service Agent Injured
A Secret Service agent was shot during the incident. President Trump later stated the agent was in good condition. FBI representatives reported the suspect attempted to breach security and fired at the agent, who was wearing a bulletproof vest and was transported to a hospital; the agent’s life is not in danger.
Suspect Identified and Motive Unknown
Trump described the suspect as a “lunatic” and stated he believed the individual acted alone. The Associated Press identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, who had rented a room at the hotel.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown. Trump responded to a question about whether he was the target, saying, “I think so.” He added there were no security warnings prior to the gala.
Trump’s Comments on Iran and Incident Footage
Trump stated the incident would not deter him from pursuing a conflict with Iran, though he did not believe the two issues were connected. He posted images of the suspect on the floor and video of the suspect going through security on Truth Social.
The suspect did not reach the ballroom. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, who was present, described the scene as terrifying, stating the shots were “so loud” and “so frightening.”
Historical Context
The gala was held at the Hilton hotel in Washington, the same location where an attempt was made on President Ronald Reagan’s life in 1981.
