Ukraine has voiced criticism over the release of Alexander Butiagin to Russia, asserting Moscow will exploit the case to justify its actions in Crimea.
Ukraine Deems Initial Extradition Ruling “Completely Justified”
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stated that the earlier Polish court decision allowing Butiagin’s extradition was “completely justified.” In March, a Warsaw court ruled that extraditing Alexander Butiagin to Ukraine was legally permissible.
Russia Will Politically Exploit the Case, Ukraine Claims
Ukraine asserts Russia will use this case politically to justify the occupation of Crimea and the activities of Russian citizens in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. Kyiv views Butiagin’s case as part of a larger dispute over the legality of Russia’s presence in Crimea.
Who is Alexander Butiagin?
Alexander Butiagin is an archaeologist and researcher of antiquity affiliated with the State Hermitage Museum. He heads the archaeology sector of the northern Black Sea coast and conducted research at the site of the ancient city of Myrmekion in Crimea.
Arrest, Extradition Ruling, and Subsequent Exchange
Butiagin was detained in Poland in early December 2025 at Ukraine’s request. Ukrainian authorities accused him of conducting archaeological work in annexed Crimea without the consent of legitimate authorities and partially damaging a cultural heritage site. While a Warsaw court approved his extradition in March, he was ultimately transferred to Russia as part of an exchange.
Exchange Details
Butiagin was exchanged alongside others for Andrzej Poczobut, a Polish entrepreneur and Father Grzegorz Gawła, as well as two members of Moldovan intelligence.
Kyiv Announces Further Legal Action
Ukrainian diplomacy has announced it will continue to demand “real legal responsibility” from all Russian entities acting in support of the occupation and the war. Ukraine intends to continue using available legal mechanisms, including in the jurisdictions of partner countries, regarding the Butiagin case and similar instances.
