President Karol Nawrocki will initiate the formation of a council to draft a new constitution on May 3rd, Constitution Day, with initial members appointed that day.
Nawrocki to Participate in National Holiday Celebrations
Karol Nawrocki will participate in celebrations marking the National Holiday of the Third of May. He will attend mass at St. John’s Archcathedral and ceremonies at the Royal Castle, including the presentation of the Order of the White Eagle and the appointment of the new council.
New Constitution Council to Begin Work
The process of creating a council for a new constitution will begin on Constitution Day, May 3rd. The first members of the council will be appointed on this day, according to presidential spokesperson Leśkiewicz.
Broad Representation on Council
The council’s composition will include representatives from parliamentary clubs and caucuses (two from each club, one from each caucus), a range of experts, and individuals with diverse perspectives on law and the current constitution.
Consensus-Based Constitution Sought
Leśkiewicz emphasized that the constitution must be developed through political consensus, stating it is the most important act and requires a political decision.
“Brainstorming” Session Planned
The Presidential Palace aims to facilitate a “brainstorming” session regarding the constitution.
Diverse Opinions Welcomed
Leśkiewicz dismissed concerns that gathering diverse experts and politicians could open a “Pandora’s Box,” arguing that it is essential for the rule of law and a transparent process in creating the fundamental legal act for all Poles.
Formal Procedures and Referendum Anticipated
The process will involve initial brainstorming, followed by the development of a joint project that will then be formally processed by the Polish parliament, in accordance with established rules. A referendum is also anticipated.
Existing Advisory Councils
Currently, fourteen councils operate under President Nawrocki, forming a broad consultative and advisory body based on external experts. In addition to the new constitution council, President Nawrocki will soon appoint a council for Polonia and Poles abroad.
