Poland Promotes Twelve Officers to General Rank Amidst Military Modernization

On May 2nd, 2026, President Karol Nawrocki appointed twelve Polish Armed Forces officers to general ranks in Warsaw, coinciding with national flag and diaspora celebrations.

Significant Leadership Changes in the Polish Military

Poland has appointed twelve new generals as the military undergoes important changes. The ceremony took place on May 2nd, 2026, at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw, during celebrations for Flag Day and Polish Diaspora Day.

The appointments were made at the request of Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Two officers were promoted to the rank of divisional general: Brigadier General Dariusz Lewandowski, commander of the 18th Mechanized Division, and Brigadier General Michał Strzelecki, head of the Special Forces Component.

New Naval Leadership

The Navy gained a new rear admiral with the promotion of Commander Przemysław Karaś, Deputy Commander of the Maritime Operations Center. This promotion is significant given the increasing security concerns in the Baltic Sea region and geopolitical tensions.

Brigadier Generals Appointed

Nine colonels were promoted to the rank of brigadier general, including commanders of key operational brigades and officers holding strategic positions within the command structure.

The newly appointed brigadier generals include Dariusz Dróżdż (20th Mechanized Brigade), Krzysztof Duda (12th Mechanized Brigade), Marcin Dusza (21st Podhale Rifle Brigade), Piotr Gołos (25th Air Cavalry Brigade), Jarosław Kowalski (Deputy Commander of the Territorial Defense Forces), Andrzej Kupis (Head of the Rocket Forces and Artillery), Andrzej Lis (Deputy Commander for Transformation), Piotr Męczyński (18th Artillery Brigade), and Robert Polak (General Staff of the Polish Army).

Army Modernization and the Importance of Promotions

The promotions occurred in the presence of Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, General Wiesław Kukula. The Polish armed forces have been undergoing intensive transformation in recent years, including increasing troop numbers and modernizing military equipment.

This process involves the acquisition of modern weapon systems such as Abrams tanks, HIMARS launchers, and F-35 aircraft. Experts emphasize that personnel changes at the highest command levels are essential for effectively managing the army’s growing potential.

Symbolic Ceremony and National Pride

Each promoted officer received a mace – a symbol of military power and command tradition – from the Minister of National Defense. This historical attribute, originating from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, is now part of the military ceremony emphasizing the rank of office.

The ceremony also had a symbolic and civic dimension. The President handed over 16 national flags that had previously flown on the Presidential Palace mast to Polish organizations abroad and military schools, highlighting the importance of ties with Poles living abroad and the role of patriotic education.

Regional Security Context

These general appointments are part of a broader context of security in Central and Eastern Europe. In light of the ongoing war in Ukraine and tensions on NATO’s eastern flank, Poland is consistently strengthening its armed forces.

The expansion of the 18th Mechanized Division, the development of Special Forces, and the modernization of the Navy are elements of this strategy. The new commanders will be responsible for implementing key tasks, including integrating new technologies, developing defense capabilities, and cooperating with allies.
