A 15-16 year old girl died Saturday around 10:20 a.m. in Anielin, Wieluń County, Poland, following a gas leak explosion in a residential building.
Gas Leak Suspected Cause
The explosion in the building in Anielin is believed to have been caused by a gas hose leak, with reports indicating a gas cylinder exploded. The building’s structure was not compromised.
Injuries Reported
A woman, approximately 40 years old, suffered third-degree burns and was airlifted to the Burn Treatment Center in Siemianowice Śląskie. A 20-year-old woman, in shock, was also hospitalized.
Firefighters evacuated a person in a wheelchair from the building, but they did not require medical attention.
Annual Gas Cylinder Explosions
The Transport Technical Supervision reports over 100 gas cylinder explosions occur annually in Poland, most often in multi-family and single-family homes.
Improper Use a Major Factor
Incorrect usage, particularly connecting cylinders to appliances, and leaks in the cylinders or connected installations are the most common causes of gas cylinder explosions. Even a small leak can create an explosive mixture.
Experts emphasize that faulty connections to stoves, grills, or heaters are often the cause of fires or gas explosions, not the cylinder itself.
Safety Precautions
If a gas odor is detected, do not turn lights on or off. Close the cylinder valve and ventilate the room.
