On May 3rd, Karol Nawrocki appointed the first members of the New Constitution Council, as reported by Gazeta.pl. The council is tasked with drafting a new constitution before the end of Nawrocki’s presidency.

Ryszard Piotrowski, former Sejm Speaker and legal doctor Józef Zych, former President of the Constitutional Tribunal Julia Przyłębska, and retired judge and former Justice Minister Barbara Piwnik, who served under Leszek Miller’s government. Tusk Rejects Participation in Constitutional Debate

Donald Tusk stated he is willing to participate in a serious discussion about the constitution but will not engage in political games. He left it to others to believe the initiative is serious, stating he would not pretend it was.

Tusk Refuses Dialogue with Przyłębska

The Prime Minister added he would not discuss constitutional order with Julia Przyłębska, stating he would feel it was “grotesque.” He emphasized that the current constitution clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of those in power in Poland.

Concerns Over Constitutional Violations

Tusk noted that Poland is a parliamentary-cabinet republic with clearly defined presidential duties. However, he warned that those with ill intentions can easily circumvent or reinterpret the constitution, leading to negative consequences. He stressed that even the worst regimes have had well-written constitutions, but practical implementation is key.

During the celebrations of the National Day of the Third of May, Karol Nawrocki thanked those who agreed to join the council. He expressed hope that the Presidential Palace would become a place for responsible political and social debate, guaranteeing a fair discussion and inviting all to participate.

Nawrocki announced the next step would be to appoint experts, constitutionalists, lawyers, and specialists in various social fields.
