Man Dies Following Police Intervention in Poznań

A 40-year-old man died after a police intervention in Poznań, Poland, following an incident obstructing medical assistance to an injured person.

Nighttime Incident in Poznań

A nighttime police intervention on Sienkiewicza Street in Poznań resulted in the death of a 40-year-old man. Police used pepper spray after the man interfered with paramedics attempting to help an injured individual.

At 10:18 PM, the Emergency Communication Center received a report of an injured man on Sienkiewicza Street. Officers found a man with a throat laceration, suffering from significant blood loss, and immediately began providing aid.

During the rescue effort, a 40-year-old man arrived and, according to Greater Poland Police spokesperson Andrzej Borowiak, began to disrupt the medical assistance. The man disregarded police commands, leading officers to deploy pepper spray.

Loss of Consciousness and Unsuccessful Resuscitation

Shortly after the pepper spray was used, the 40-year-old’s condition rapidly deteriorated, and he began to lose consciousness. Immediate resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful, and the man died at the scene.

A doctor present during the intervention, acting as a forensic medical expert, initially found no apparent cause of death or indication of foul play.

Prosecutorial and Internal Investigations

Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Simultaneously, internal police control units are conducting their own review.

This approach—a prosecutorial investigation alongside internal control—was previously used in a similar case in Gniezno in July 2025, where the use of pepper spray against a 42-year-old man led investigators to consider potential abuse of authority and involuntary manslaughter. Internal control found no irregularities in that case, and the autopsy revealed a non-traumatic cause of death.

The final determination of the cause of death and any potential officer responsibility in the Poznań case will depend on the findings of forensic experts and the ongoing investigation. Prosecutors have not yet released details regarding any charges or the direction of the investigation.
