The United Arab Emirates was targeted by Iranian missiles and drones on Tuesday, prompting air defense responses and condemnation from international leaders.
UAE Air Defenses Intercept Attacks
UAE air defenses are currently engaged in intercepting missile and drone attacks originating from Iran. The Ministry of Defense confirmed that sounds heard across the country are a result of their air defense systems intercepting ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones.
The Ministry of Defense added that its air defense systems are actively countering threats from missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. They emphasized that the sounds heard nationwide are linked to ongoing combat operations involving missiles and drones.
Previous Attacks and Condemnation
The UAE reported intercepting 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and four drones launched from Iran on Monday evening. These were the first Iranian attacks on the UAE in nearly a month.
The Foreign Ministry in Abu Dhabi condemned the resumption of “unprovoked, terrorist attacks” targeting civilians.
Damage and Casualties Reported
Authorities reported earlier that a drone attack caused a fire at oil infrastructure in the port city of Fujairah, injuring three Indian nationals.
Ceasefire and Regional Conflict
These attacks mark the first reported Iranian strikes against the UAE since the April 8th suspension of the conflict between the US and Israel and Iran, which began on February 28th. During the active phase of the conflict, Iran targeted Israel and Gulf states, including the UAE, resulting in 13 deaths and thousands of missile and rocket attacks in the Emirates.
International Response
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the new Iranian attacks on the UAE are unacceptable and a blatant violation of the country’s sovereignty and international law. She expressed solidarity with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, its people, and other EU partners in the Middle East, noting the security implications for Europe.
US Stance and Warning to Iran
Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth stated on Tuesday that the ceasefire remains in effect. He addressed Iran’s Monday attacks on US ships and merchant vessels, as well as the Emirati oil export terminal.
The Secretary of Defense warned Iran that further attacks would meet a strong response, stating the US is prepared to defend its personnel and assets and ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
