Roztocze Forest Fire Triggers RCB Warning; Pilot Killed in Aircraft Crash

A massive forest fire near Kozaki in the Biłgoraj county has burned over 150 hectares, resulting in the death of a pilot after a firefighting aircraft crashed.

Tragedy During Firefighting Operations

On Tuesday around 3:00 PM, a fire broke out near Kozaki village in the Józefów forest district, quickly consuming over 150 hectares of forest. During the firefighting mission, a Dromader aircraft crashed, resulting in the death of the pilot.

Scale of the Fire and Emergency Response

Black Hawk and State Forest helicopters, along with Dromader aircraft, have been active in the firefighting efforts since morning. Deputy Chief of the State Fire Service Paweł Frysztak estimated that the fire could potentially encompass an area of up to 250 hectares.

The operation is complicated by difficult terrain and a crown fire that spreads rapidly between treetops. Minister Kierwiński met with service representatives after 6:30 AM, noting that the next few hours will determine the direction of the situation.

Safety Alerts and Smoke Warnings

The Government Security Center (RCB) issued an alert to residents in Biłgoraj county, specifically the Łukowa, Józefów, and Aleksandrów municipalities, advising them to keep windows closed and follow official instructions.

In Zwierzyniec, located over 20 km from the fire, heavy smoke and the smell of burning are being reported, creating conditions similar to intense smog.
