Death of MP Łukasz Litewka: Prosecutor Details Final Phone Call Before Fatal Accident

Polish MP Łukasz Litewka was killed on April 23 after being struck by a car while cycling in Dąbrowa Górnicza, sparking a criminal investigation into the driver.

The Fatal Collision and Legal Status

36-year-old Lewica MP Łukasz Litewka died on April 23 after being struck by a Mitsubishi Colt while cycling on Kazimierzowska Street in Dąbrowa Górnicza. A 57-year-old man has been charged with causing the fatal accident and faces up to eight years in prison; neither the driver nor the victim were under the influence of alcohol.

The suspect was released on April 28 after his family paid a 40,000 PLN bail but remains under police protection due to online threats. The District Court in Sosnowiec is currently reviewing the prosecution’s request to arrest the 57-year-old.

Investigation Into the Deputy’s Final Moments

The District Prosecutor’s Office in Dąbrowa Górnicza is analyzing witness statements, recordings, and digital data, including phone logs from the time of the accident. Prosecutor Bartosz Kilian reported that a witness was on the phone with Litewka between 1:07 PM and 1:14 PM when the deputy’s voice suddenly vanished at the moment of impact.

While the suspect claims memory loss or unconsciousness, prosecutors believe these statements are a defense strategy, noting he was lucid and communicative immediately following the incident. Preliminary findings indicate the driver swerved into the opposite lane, and no brake marks were identified at the scene.

The Political and Charitable Legacy of Łukasz Litewka

Born in 1989 in Sosnowiec, Litewka was a sociology graduate from the University of Silesia who began his political career as a local councilor in 2014. In the 2023 parliamentary elections, he secured a seat in the Sejm with approximately 40,000 votes, outperforming other candidates on his list.

Litewka was widely known for his social and charitable work through the #TeamLitewka foundation, which supported children’s medical treatments and animal rescue. During his 2023 campaign, he famously featured shelter dogs on his campaign posters to promote local animal adoption.
