Deputy Interior Minister Wiesław Szczepański announced on Monday that Poland is planning legal and diplomatic actions to bring Zbigniew Ziobro back from the United States before next year’s elections.
Plan for Ziobro’s Return
Deputy Interior Minister Wiesław Szczepański informed Polskie Radio 24 on Monday that a meeting at the Ministry of Justice will determine specific actions regarding Zbigniew Ziobro. He noted that the PiS politician’s departure to the United States was not surprising, as such a possibility had been discussed previously.
Legal and Diplomatic Challenges
Szczepański admitted that bringing Ziobro back would be difficult, involving the Ministry of Justice and Polish courts to issue a European Arrest Warrant. This would be followed by an extradition request and corresponding diplomatic efforts.
The final stage involves the MSWiA and Polish services executing a court ruling upon receiving US consent. Szczepański noted that the process depends on the US federal court and the American administration, specifically President Donald Trump, who would need to make a decision.
US Authorization and Election Deadlines
Szczepański pointed out that Ziobro’s travel to the USA would not have been possible without the consent of American authorities and the issuance of a visa approved by the highest officials. When asked if Ziobro could be returned before the parliamentary elections next autumn, the Deputy Minister stated that Poland would take actions to make it happen.
Criminal Charges and Flight from Justice
Prosecutors accuse Ziobro of leading an organized crime group and utilizing his position as Minister of Justice for criminal activities. In late 2025, after the Sejm agreed to his detention and arrest over irregularities in the Justice Fund, Ziobro fled to Budapest.
Earlier this year, it was reported that the politician received international protection in Hungary. Following media reports on Sunday that Ziobro had left Hungary for the United States, the politician himself confirmed his presence in the US on Telewizja Republika.
