Over a three-day period, Special Intervention Group officers at Warsaw-Okęcie Airport twice intervened after passengers claimed to have explosives in their luggage during routine check-in procedures.
False bomb threats at check-in
Special Intervention Group officers from the Warsaw-Okęcie Border Guard station handled two separate incidents involving passengers who declared they were carrying explosives. Both incidents occurred during standard security questioning by airport ground staff.
A 39-year-old man headed to Bulgaria claimed to have a bomb in his bag, while a 73-year-old woman traveling to Tunisia informed staff she had two bombs in her suitcase. Both individuals later claimed their statements were intended as jokes.
Security protocols and consequences
Despite the passengers’ claims of humor, Border Guard pyrotechnicians immediately isolated the individuals and conducted thorough inspections of their baggage. No dangerous items were discovered in either case.
The consequences for the travelers were serious. Both were issued financial penalties, and their respective airlines refused to allow them to board their scheduled flights, citing security concerns.
A warning to travelers
Authorities reiterate that there is no place for jokes regarding bombs or explosives at airports. Such reports trigger mandatory, high-priority safety procedures that require an immediate response from security services.
