Ben-Gvir’s Treatment of Flotilla Activists Sparks International Backlash and Israeli Government Rift

The Israeli Navy has intercepted over 40 vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla, leading to the detention of international activists and a severe diplomatic confrontation over footage shared by Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Diplomatic Fallout and Demands for Apology

Following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, Israeli authorities detained numerous activists, including Italian and Polish citizens, and transported them to the port of Ashdod. Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir posted a video on social media showing the detainees handcuffed on the floor, calling them “supporters of terrorism.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the footage as unacceptable, stating it violates human dignity. The Italian government has demanded a formal apology and is working to secure the release of its citizens. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that the Israeli ambassador will be summoned to the ministry to provide an explanation for the treatment of the detainees.

Political Fractures Within the Israeli Government

The incident has drawn sharp internal criticism. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused Ben-Gvir of damaging the country’s reputation through a “shameful spectacle” that undermined professional diplomatic and military efforts. Ben-Gvir rejected the criticism, reiterating that Israel would not tolerate those who align with Hamas.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu distanced himself from the minister’s actions, stating that the treatment of the activists does not align with Israeli values. He confirmed that while Israel maintains the right to prevent vessels from reaching the Gaza Strip, he has ordered the swift deportation of the detained activists.

International and Polish Reactions

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern regarding the detention of its citizens and reminded all parties of the obligations under international maritime law, specifically regarding freedom of navigation on international waters. Poland expects a thorough explanation of the circumstances surrounding the military operation.

France has also joined the call for accountability, with Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot requesting the summoning of the Israeli ambassador to Paris. He described Ben-Gvir’s behavior as unacceptable and emphasized that French citizens must be treated with respect while in custody.
