Iran Warns of New War with U.S. Amid Escalation Fears

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliamentary speaker and lead negotiator, has warned that U.S. actions suggest a push toward a new phase of conflict, despite the ongoing ceasefire in effect since April 8.

Tehran Alleges U.S. Military Ambitions

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that both overt and covert U.S. maneuvers indicate that Washington has not abandoned its military objectives. He noted that Tehran is closely monitoring the situation, suggesting that the U.S. still hopes for an eventual Iranian surrender.

Ghalibaf added that the Iranian military has utilized the current ceasefire period to consolidate and rebuild its strength.

Stagnation in Peace Negotiations

The ceasefire, which began on April 8, has yet to lead to a lasting peace, as diplomatic talks remain deadlocked. Both nations continue to reject each other’s proposals for a formal agreement.

Tensions Over Nukes and the Strait of Hormuz

The conflict remains driven by disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and the strategic Strait of Hormuz. While Iran maintains its nuclear activities are peaceful, it has reportedly accumulated approximately 440 kg of uranium enriched beyond civilian levels, drawing sharp warnings from the United States.

Following the initiation of U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 28, Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz. This action, coupled with U.S. efforts to intercept vessels heading to Iranian ports, has blocked regional energy exports and caused significant global fuel price volatility.
