Pedestrian Struck by Tram While Wearing Headphones

A young man was hospitalized on May 21 after walking onto a tram crossing directly into the path of a line 20 tram at the intersection of Powstańców Śląskich and Dywizjonu 303 in Bemowo.

The Incident in Bemowo

At 9:20 a.m. on May 21, a young man was struck by a line 20 tram at the intersection of Powstańców Śląskich and Dywizjonu 303. The pedestrian entered the crossing, which lacks traffic signals, while wearing headphones.

Despite the motorman’s use of a warning bell and emergency braking, the collision was unavoidable. The man was partially pinned between the tram and the station island but managed to extract himself before being transported to a hospital.

Service Disruptions and Police Investigation

Police arrived at the scene to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. Trams on line 20 were diverted to the Koło loop, and bus line 523 served as a temporary alternative. Normal service resumed at 11:44 a.m.

Dangers of Distracted Pedestrians

This incident follows another collision involving a pedestrian in the Bródno district earlier today. Authorities emphasize that headphones, especially those with noise-canceling features, severely limit a pedestrian’s ability to hear warning signals and traffic.

Because trams have significantly longer braking distances than cars, a driver’s reaction is often insufficient to prevent injury. Distraction near tracks and intersections remains a primary cause of severe, life-altering accidents.
