On Friday, May 22, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski publicly thanked President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the decision to send an additional 5,000 U.S. troops to Poland.
Diplomatic coordination leads to deployment
Following a Thursday announcement by President Trump regarding the election success of President Karol Nawrocki, Sikorski expressed his gratitude to those involved. He noted that the Polish government had coordinated its efforts effectively to secure this outcome.
Sikorski emphasized that the result was a joint effort, highlighting the work performed by Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and his representatives in Washington. He added that Poland’s reputation as a nation committed to defense was a significant contributing factor.
Clarification on troop logistics
When asked whether this deployment represented a reversal of previous Pentagon decisions or an addition to existing forces, Sikorski stated that specific details remain unknown. He confirmed that Polish Ambassador to NATO, Jacek Najder, is currently in contact with Alliance authorities and his American counterparts to clarify the arrangements.
NATO ministerial meeting in Helsingborg
The announcement coincided with the final day of a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Helsingborg, Sweden. The summit is focused on preparations for the upcoming July NATO summit in Ankara, with primary discussions centering on increased defense spending and ongoing support for Ukraine.
