NATO Chief Welcomes Trump’s Deployment Pledge for Poland

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has endorsed Donald Trump’s commitment to send 5,000 additional U.S. troops to Poland, emphasizing that the move signals a broader transition toward greater European strategic autonomy.

Trump Announces Troop Surge

On Thursday evening, May 21, U.S. President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that the United States would deploy 5,000 additional soldiers to Poland. Trump attributed the decision to his relationship with the recently elected Polish president, Karol Nawrocki, and the latter’s electoral success.

Contradicting Withdrawal Reports

The announcement follows recent media reports suggesting that the Pentagon had planned to halt the rotation of U.S. brigades and withdraw forces from Europe, including 5,000 troops from Germany. Reports from Reuters and CNN previously indicated that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth intended to reduce U.S. military presence abroad.

Government Reassurance

Polish government officials had previously denied reports of an American troop withdrawal. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz specifically asserted that despite U.S. administrative reorganization, the total number of American personnel stationed in Poland would remain stable.

Rutte Calls for European Autonomy

Speaking at an alliance meeting in Sweden on Friday, Mark Rutte welcomed the deployment pledge. He noted that the alliance is currently finalizing the operational details. Rutte stressed that the current trajectory must focus on a stronger NATO, allowing Europe to become gradually less dependent on a single ally over time.
