UK Defense Minister’s Plane Targeted by GPS Jamming Near Russia

The British government aircraft carrying Defense Secretary John Healey experienced severe satellite signal interference while flying near Russian territory on Thursday, May 21, forcing pilots to navigate using alternative methods.

GPS Signal Disruption During Official Travel

The incident occurred as Defense Secretary John Healey returned from a trip to Estonia, where he had been visiting British troops. A journalist from The Times, who was on board the Falcon 900LX, reported that the plane’s satellite signal was jammed during the three-hour flight.

Passengers, including reporters and photographers, were informed that the aircraft could continue flying safely despite the loss of GPS functionality. The onboard computers lost internet access, and pilots were required to utilize manual navigation techniques to determine the jet’s location.

A Pattern of Interference Near Russian Territory

The Times identified Russia as the party behind the interference. Downing Street acknowledged that such jamming is common in the vicinity of the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. In 2024, a plane carrying the former British Conservative Defense Secretary experienced similar GPS jamming while flying near the same region.

Similar navigational issues have been reported elsewhere, including an emergency landing by a plane carrying European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen last September. That aircraft was forced to land in Bulgaria after experiencing navigation difficulties, which the Commission suspected were the result of a Russian operation.

Hostile Maneuvers in the Black Sea

The incident follows recent reports from the UK Ministry of Defense regarding dangerous activity near the Black Sea. In April, two Russian fighter jets flew near an unarmed British reconnaissance aircraft in a manner described by officials as multiple and dangerous maneuvers.

The British government formally condemned the behavior of the Russian pilots, labeling the actions as dangerous and unacceptable in a protest lodged with the Russian embassy.
