Following Sunday’s referendum on May 24, Kraków residents voted to remove their mayor from office, while the concurrent attempt to dissolve the City Council failed to reach the required turnout threshold.
Referendum Results and Voter Turnout
The referendum saw 176,228 participants, resulting in a turnout of 29.99 percent. Among the 175,212 valid votes cast, 171,581 residents (97.93 percent) voted in favor of recalling the mayor of Kraków.
The vote to recall the City Council reached a 29.97 percent turnout. Because the number of valid ballots cast fell below the statutory threshold, this portion of the referendum is considered invalid.
Path to Early Elections
Early elections must be called by the Prime Minister within 90 days of the referendum, meaning they could take place by August, with a potential second round in September. Until a new mayor is elected, the city will be managed by a government-appointed commissioner, with City Secretary Antoni Fryczek currently holding administrative authority.
Origins of the Recall Movement
The recall initiative was launched by a non-partisan citizens’ group and supported by opposition politicians, including members of PiS, Konfederation, and allies of former PO candidate Łukasz Gibała. Jan Hoffman, head of the Stare Miasto district council, served as the committee’s public face.
Opponents cited the city’s growing debt, unfulfilled campaign promises, and alleged misconduct. Specific grievances included the implementation of the Clean Transport Zone (SCT), public transit fare hikes, and extended paid parking hours.
Potential Candidates for Mayor
Initial names have surfaced regarding the upcoming race. LoveKraków.pl reports that Bartosz Bocheńczak, former chief of staff for Sławomir Mentzen, will be the Konfederation candidate. Former NIK president Marian Banaś also announced his candidacy via social media, promising “normalcy and honest management.”
Other rumored candidates include Konrad Berkowicz, Grzegorz Braun, Michał Drewnicki, Adam Hareńczyk, Jan Hoffman, Piotr Kempf, Łukasz Kmita, Aleksandra Owca, Bogusław Sonik, Ireneusz Raś, Małgorzata Wassermann, and Bogdan Klich.
