Bąkiewicz Declares Plan to Protect Belweder, Sparks Widespread Backlash

Nationalist figure Robert Bąkiewicz has announced that his Border Defense Movement will begin guarding the Belweder palace, claiming state services are failing to provide adequate security for President Karol Nawrocki.

Public Opinion on Bąkiewicz’s Security Initiative

In a survey conducted on May 26, 2026, regarding the activities of Robert Bąkiewicz, a total of 4,001 votes were cast. The results showed a strongly negative sentiment, with 83.55 percent of participants choosing the “definitely negative” option, while 4.37 percent opted for “rather negative.”

Positive reactions were significantly lower, as 9.90 percent of respondents voted “definitely positive” and 1.42 percent chose “rather positive.” A small group of 0.75 percent declared no opinion on the matter.

Questioning State Security Protocols

During an interview with wPolsce24 on Sunday, Bąkiewicz argued that state agencies are failing to ensure the president’s safety. He cited the recent security intervention at the family home of Karol Nawrocki following a false alarm as justification for his decision to deploy his own security teams to the Belweder palace starting Monday.

Bąkiewicz stated that the current situation facing the Polish state and the president carries significant risk. As a prominent figure associated with nationalist circles, a former head of the Independence March Association, and a former parliamentary candidate for Law and Justice, his announcement has drawn significant attention.

A History of Controversy

Bąkiewicz’s activities have frequently sparked public debate. He is currently awaiting a verdict in a trial related to the 2020 Women’s Strike protests. Additionally, questions have been raised regarding the financial status of the Independence March Association following a change in leadership.

Controversy also surrounds his past rhetoric, specifically comments made during a 2022 march regarding Polish history and Nazi Germany. While Bąkiewicz later clarified that he was addressing the fight against German occupation and war reparations, his remarks and the presence of associated protest banners generated intense political and media criticism at the time.
