Massive Forest Fire in Mazovia: Arson Suspected

A significant forest fire erupted in the Mińsk district on Thursday, forcing emergency evacuations and the deployment of massive air and ground support as officials point toward a potential arsonist.

Detection and Rapid Spread

At 1:33 p.m., a surveillance camera tower detected smoke in the Mińsk district. Piotr Serafin, the district forester, reported that the fire originated on private land and was exacerbated by extremely high winds, which pushed the flames into state-owned pine forests.

By Thursday evening, the fire had engulfed dozens of hectares, leading authorities to order the evacuation of nearby residents. Officials noted that the dry conditions of the forest floor, caused by a lack of rainfall, have fueled the intensity of the blaze.

Emergency Response and Aerial Support

More than 65 fire brigades, along with specialized forest firefighting groups from Poznań, Lublin, Łódź, and Olsztyn, have been deployed to contain the disaster. Efforts are currently focused on using aerial support, including Dromader aircraft and a police Black Hawk helicopter equipped with a 3,000-liter Bambi Bucket, to prevent the fire from spreading further.

Deputy Minister of Interior and Administration Wiesław Szczepański confirmed that crews are working to cut off the fire’s path, which is currently moving through the treetops. The fire is being treated as a high-priority operation given the difficulty of ground access.

Security Measures and Road Closures

The Metropolitan Police have activated a formal police action, deploying additional forces from the Warsaw Prevention Department to secure the perimeter and assist in traffic management. Police are strictly controlling access to the area to ensure fire vehicles have clear passage.

Due to the unpredictable movement of the flames, authorities have suspended traffic on National Road 50 (DK50) between Stanisławów and Łochów. Police confirmed that aerial units are working in close coordination with firefighters to suppress the fire from above.
