Violent protests broke out in Southampton on Tuesday following the release of police footage showing officers arresting a dying 18-year-old of Polish descent instead of providing him medical aid.
The Death of Henry Nowak
In December 2025, 18-year-old Henry Nowak was fatally stabbed in Southampton by Vickrum Digwa, who used a traditional Sikh kirpan. Upon arrival, police were misled by the attacker, who falsely accused Nowak of a racist assault.
Bodycam footage released on Monday shows the bleeding teenager repeating “I can’t breathe” and “I’ve been stabbed” while officers, misled by the perpetrator, placed him under arrest rather than seeking medical assistance. Digwa was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday and will be eligible for parole after serving at least 21 years.
Police Response and Public Outcry
The release of the video sparked intense public anger, leading to violent clashes on Tuesday evening where protesters threw bricks and bottles at police outside the Southampton station. Hundreds participated in the demonstration.
Minister for Policing Sarah Jones confirmed two arrests related to the riots—one for assaulting an officer and another for weapons possession. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the “disgraceful violence,” stating that nothing justifies using the tragedy to fuel disorder.
Official Investigations and Political Fallout
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the footage as “monstrous.” The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently investigating the circumstances of the intervention and the actions of the officers involved.
Local police have apologized, citing that they were “misled” by the attacker. Meanwhile, the department has condemned a wave of online disinformation and threats directed at their personnel. The tragedy has ignited a national debate on policing standards, with activist Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk criticizing the officers’ conduct and the treatment of citizens.
