Teresa “Bibi” Głuchowska, Home Army Veteran and Warsaw Uprising Participant, Dies at 102

Teresa Irena Głuchowska, a Home Army liaison and participant in the Warsaw Uprising, has passed away at the age of 102, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service to Polish independence.

A Legacy of Patriotic Service

The Territorial Defence Forces announced that Teresa Irena Głuchowska, known by the codename “Bibi,” passed away on June 3, 2026. A soldier of the Home Army, she served as a liaison for the “Żaglowiec” group within the “Żywiciel” district during the Warsaw Uprising.

Officials honored her as a representative of a generation defined by courage and sacrifice, noting that her life remains a testament to the highest standards of patriotism and the struggle for a free Poland.

Wartime Experience and Uprising

During the occupation, Głuchowska attended clandestine high school classes in Warsaw. By the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, she was not yet 21 years old and held the rank of rifleman, participating in the Żoliborz combat operations.

Following the fall of the uprising, she was taken prisoner by the Germans and held in Stalag XI A Altengrabow and Stalag VI C Oberlangen. She was liberated by the forces of General Stanisław Maczek on April 12, 1945.

Post-War Life and Honors

After her liberation, she worked for the Red Cross, assisting with the distribution of supplies and helping families locate one another. She emigrated to the United States in 1970 before returning to Poland in 2022.

In 2024, she was formally recognized for her contributions to the nation, receiving the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
