Following a private meeting in Warsaw this weekend, Minister Tomasz Siemoniak informed Ukrainian General Kyryło Budanov that the Polish government remains unified and cannot be divided on current diplomatic tensions.
Diplomatic Tensions Over UPA Designation
Minister Tomasz Siemoniak, coordinator of special services, confirmed on Monday that his weekend meeting with General Kyryło Budanov focused largely on the friction caused by President Zelensky’s decision to name a Ukrainian military unit after the Heroes of the UPA.
Siemoniak stated that while he would not disclose details of the private meeting, he emphasized that Budanov heard the same message from every Polish official he encountered: Poland cannot be divided on this issue.
Speculation on the Order of the White Eagle
Responding to inquiries regarding potential political maneuvers involving the Order of the White Eagle, Siemoniak dismissed the need for speculation. He noted that the matter of counter-signing any decisions regarding President Zelensky’s decorations remains a hypothetical future scenario.
The minister reaffirmed that Prime Minister Tusk has consistently stressed the unity of the Polish leadership in this matter, leaving the ultimate decisions to Ukrainian authorities while urging direct dialogue to preserve bilateral solidarity.
Avoiding Worst-Case Scenarios
According to reports from the RBK-Ukraine news agency, the discussions held by General Budanov in Warsaw were aimed at avoiding a worst-case scenario. The agency reported that talks covered complex issues beyond the subject of state orders, with Ukraine focused on fostering constructive strategic cooperation.
During his visit, Budanov met with several high-ranking Polish officials, including Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Marcin Przydacz of the President’s Office, Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki, and BBN head Bartosz Grodecki.
