Former President Bronisław Komorowski revealed on Monday that the Order of the White Eagle Chapter remains split over the potential revocation of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decoration following recent military naming controversies.
Internal Division Regarding the Order
Bronisław Komorowski stated on TVP Info that a significant portion of the Chapter does not support the motion to strip the Ukrainian president of his award. Host Justyna Dobrosz-Oracz confirmed that members are indeed divided, noting that while a vote took place, the final stance remains undisclosed.
The Role of the Motion
Despite the lack of consensus, Komorowski argued that Karol Nawrocki’s initiative served a purpose by signaling to Ukraine that Poles are united in demanding condemnation of historical atrocities in Volhynia. He suggested that rather than resorting to the drastic measure of revoking the order, diplomatic efforts should be prioritized to reach a compromise.
UPA Controversy and Presidential Stance
Komorowski criticized Zelenskyy’s decision to name a military unit after the “Heroes of the UPA,” labeling it as harmful and misguided. He emphasized that the Ukrainian president should prioritize maintaining alliances rather than alienating Polish public opinion.
Official Status of the Review
The Chapter convened on Monday to discuss the matter after Karol Nawrocki proposed the revocation of the order. Following the meeting, presidential spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz confirmed that the body has provided its opinion to Nawrocki, with a final decision by the president expected in due course.
