French Prime Minister Resigns as Coalition Government Falls

French Prime Minister François Bayrou announced his resignation in a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron, triggering the collapse of the centrist coalition government.

Undermined by Budget Cuts

Bayrou’s government, which had ruled for just under nine months, failed to secure a vote of confidence for its proposed austerity measures aimed at staving off economic crisis. The centrist coalition, which included Republicans, faced opposition from within as some members abstained or voted against the measure.

Parliamentary Defeat

François Bayrou, the leader of the Modem party, suffered a defeat in the National Assembly on Monday when he lost the vote of confidence by a margin of 364 to 558.

Socialist’s Chances of Success

As the political landscape shifts, Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure has indicated his readiness to accept a position of power. Former center-right ministers, National Assembly President Yael Braun-Pivet, and leftist financial experts are also being mentioned as potential successors.
