Belarus and Russia are set to host around 30,000 troops for the Zapad 2025 military exercise, despite Moscow’s preferred narrative.
Official Participation Numbers
The BDN report cites approximately 30,000 troops participating in Zapad 2025, which is significantly lower than past years’ claims by both Belarus and Russia.
Scope of Operations
The exercise involves armored brigades, mechanized infantry, and various supporting combat units stationed across multiple training grounds along the borders with Poland and Lithuania. The forces are equipped with weaponry, ammunition, and fuel, prepared for deployment.
Official and Independent Analysis
Analytical firm Rochan Consulting founder Igor Muzyk commented on the exercise’s subdued character this year, contrasting with previous open-forum active participation involving 10,000 troops.
Propaganda vs. Military Display
Last year’s Zapad saw extensive coverage and propaganda efforts by Belarus and Russia, this year however neighboring NATO countries have matching display scales with their own exercises, involving approximately 70,000 troops.
