In recent days, Tatra Mountain Rescue Service (TOPR) received many calls from tourists concerned about mysterious sounds in the forest. These sounds were explained by mountain rescuers as elk bugling, which occurs during mating season.
Bugling Season Begins in Mid-September
According to TOPR, elk bugling generally begins in mid-September and lasts for about a month. During this time, stags produce loud calls to attract mates, repel competitors, or challenge rivals.
Tourists Blocking Emergency Line
The number of calls related to the elk bugling issue increased significantly, significantly adding work for mountain rescuers. Additionally, it prevented some people needing help from reaching the emergency center.
TOPR Appeals for Common Sense
In response to the confusion, TOPR appealed on the Tatromaniak website, clarifying that the emergency number should only be used for real emergencies. They reminded visitors that in case of encountering elk or chalets, they should not approach or feed them.
