Polish Prez vs. Foreign Minister: Diplomatic Clash Over Reparations

Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski exchanged public potshots after a diplomatic meeting focused on reparations.

First Verbal Sparring

Following a meeting between Nawrocki and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Foreign Minister Sikorski mocked the President on X, stating, “In the matter of reparations Mr. President suffered a moral victory in Berlin.” Sikorski’s remarks come in response to German comments following President Karol Nawrocki’s meeting with the Chancellor and President of the Federal Republic.

Dispute Over Reparations Versus Trade Policies

During discussions focused on Ukraine aid, NATO’s eastern flank security, and Polish-German relations, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized that from the German perspective, the legal matter of reparations is closed but that remembrance remains a shared objective. Meanwhile, Minister Sikorski reminded President Nawrocki that “in the Mercosur-UE agreement matter, we also adhered to, during the Cabinet meeting, that there is no chance for a minority blocking faction,” stressing the complexity of foreign policy.
