A 16-year-old passenger died in a car accident in Krakow on Wednesday, with the 26-year-old driver, who was drunk, not being arrested despite prosecutors’ requests.
Accident Details
The accident occurred at around 1:30 AM near the intersection of al. Mickiewicza and ul. Reymonta in Krakow. The driver of a Volkswagen, 26-year-old Piotr B., lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road, hit lighting poles, and crashed into trees.
The car had five people on board; the 16-year-old passenger died, while the others were hospitalized.
Charges Against the Driver
Piotr B. was charged with causing a fatal accident under the influence of alcohol and injuring other passengers. He faced up to 20 years in prison.
The 26-year-old driver was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.58 mg/l and 0.51 mg/l in two separate tests. The prosecution alleged that he had exceeded the speed limit of 50 km/h.
Court Decision
Despite the prosecution’s request for temporary arrest, the Krakow-Krowodrza District Court decided not to impose an arrest, instead placing Piotr B. under police supervision, banning him from contacting the victims, and ordering him to pay a bail.
The prosecution announced that they would appeal the court’s decision.
