Reactions to Trump’s Comments
Following the incident where Russian drones violated Polish airspace during a massive attack on Ukraine, Trump suggested it could have been a mistake. This statement was met with widespread criticism in Poland, with politicians across the spectrum united in their rejection of Trump’s claim.
Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the PiS party, stated it was “in no case a mistake,” while Radosław Sikorski, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote on social media, “No, it wasn’t a mistake.”
Public Opinion on the Incident
A survey conducted by IBRiS found that only 10.6% of Poles believe the incident could have been a mistake, with 2.4% saying “definitely yes” and 8.2% saying “rather yes.” In contrast, 81.7% of respondents rejected the suggestion, with 46.6% saying “definitely not” and 35.1% saying “rather not.”
The survey also revealed that support for Trump’s claim was highest among voters for the Confederation party (18%), the Civic Coalition (17%), and the New Left (17%).
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred on the night of September 9-10, when Russian drones entered Polish airspace during a large-scale attack on Ukraine. Polish and allied fighter jets shot down some of the drones, while others fell several hundred kilometers into the country.
The Polish military and services reported at least 19 instances of border violations, with Presidential Minister Marcin Przydacz stating there were 21 such incidents.
