The Polish government has decided to extend border controls with Germany and Lithuania for another six months, amid concerns over public order and internal security.
Extended Border Controls
Poland’s government has published a draft project to extend controls at its borders with Germany and Lithuania for an additional six months, from October 5, 2025, to April 4, 2026. The current controls, which were introduced on July 7 and initially set to last for 30 days, have been extended several times.
Recent Statistics
According to the Border Guard’s daily report, on September 16, officers checked over 5,600 people and 2,600 vehicles. They detained four individuals and denied entry to another four. At border crossings with Germany, nearly 6,500 people and 3,200 vehicles were checked, with one person denied entry.
Temporary Schengen Border Controls
Under the Schengen Border Code, member states can temporarily reintroduce border controls for up to six months in cases of serious threats to public order or internal security. These controls can be extended if the threat persists, with a maximum duration of two years.
Closed Border with Belarus
Poland has also temporarily closed its border with Belarus, which has been in place since September 12, due to ongoing Russian-Belarusian military maneuvers. The Interior Ministry stated that the decision prioritizes the safety of Polish citizens and aims to minimize the economic impact on local businesses.
