The Polish Ministry of Culture is working on changes to the country’s national symbols, including the flag and emblem, with plans to adjust the shade of red and modernize the design.
Background of the Changes
The idea of modifying Poland’s national symbols has been around since 2021, when the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party proposed changes. The Ministry of Culture, led by Piotr Gliński, considered altering the shade of the flag and making adjustments to the emblem.
Proposed Changes
The ministry is currently working on a new law to replace the 1980 law on the emblem, colors, and anthem of the Republic of Poland. The proposed changes include adjusting the shade of red on the flag to a more crimson tone, based on historical references to the color used by the Polish nobility.
Expert Opinion
Heraldist Robert Fidura commented on the plans, explaining that the proposed change to the flag’s color is rooted in history, as the nobility used crimson-colored attire and accessories, which were expensive due to the cost of the dyes.
Implementation and Timeline
A team was established in May to work on the project, and the ministry aims to modernize the national symbols while maintaining their essence. The changes are expected to be implemented through a new law.
