UN to Hold Emergency Meeting Over Russia’s “Glaring Violation”

The UN Security Council will convene an emergency meeting in response to Russia’s alleged violation of Estonia’s airspace, amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO.

Estonia’s Response to Russian Aggression

Estonia’s foreign ministry announced that the UN Security Council will address the issue of Russia’s “blatant, reckless, and glaring violation” of NATO’s airspace over Estonia.

The meeting aims to tackle “the violation of territorial integrity and the breach of the prohibition of the threat or use of force,” according to the Estonian foreign ministry.

The Incident: Russian Jets Enter Estonian Airspace

On September 19, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace without permission, prompting Estonia to seek consultations with NATO under Article 4.

The Russian jets did not have flight plans, had their transponders turned off, and did not communicate with air traffic control.

International Condemnation and Russia’s Denial

Estonia’s foreign ministry summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires in Tallinn and delivered a diplomatic note, while international leaders condemned the incident.

Russia’s Defense Ministry denied that its jets had violated Estonian airspace, claiming they were on a planned flight and had followed international regulations.
