Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during a visit to the US, suggested that NATO adopt a “Turkish model” for managing relations with Russia and Ukraine.
Turkish-US Defense Talks
Erdogan announced that Turkey will start negotiations with the US on modernizing and purchasing F-16 fighter jets and rejoining the F-35 program. He will meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss this.
The “Turkish Model”
Erdogan described a “model of good relations” that Turkey has maintained with both Russia and Ukraine. He suggested that NATO could learn from this approach, emphasizing that Turkey has been able to balance diplomatic contacts with Russia while supporting Ukraine.
Ukraine Conflict and Prospects for Peace
Erdogan commented on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, noting that while Russian losses are increasing, Europe and the US may not be able to sustain the current level of military aid to Ukraine. He expressed skepticism about an imminent end to the war, stating that he does not believe it will end soon.
