Polish Education Minister Barbara Nowacka announces plans to introduce a new curriculum for “education for safety” to prepare students for crisis situations.
Background and Motivation
The Polish Ministry of Education is preparing changes to the current curriculum for “education for safety,” which will replace the existing “przysposobienie obronne” (defensive preparation) subject.
Minister Barbara Nowacka emphasized that the changes are a response to recent events, including the invasion of drones from Russia, highlighting the need to prepare children and young people for crisis situations.
Proposed Changes
The new curriculum will focus on practical skills, enabling students not only to learn about emergency procedures but also to experience them firsthand, such as locating shelters and recognizing alarm signals.
Minister Nowacka expressed her desire for the changes to take effect as soon as possible, ideally by September 1, 2026.
Objectives of Education for Safety
The “education for safety” subject aims to prepare students for crisis situations and to develop their ability to cope with them, with the school being the best place for such preparation.
