A1 Accident: Victim’s Mother Speaks: “We Won’t Win Against Money and Family Connections”

The trial of Sebastian M. resumed in Piotrków on Feb. 20, 2026, for the A1 highway crash that killed a family of three, as the victims’ mother delivered an emotional statement.

Final Hearing in Fatal A1 Crash Case

The trial of Sebastian M., accused of causing a fatal accident on the A1 highway, held its penultimate hearing on Feb. 20, 2026, at the District Court in Piotrków Trybunalski. The tragic incident on Sept. 16, 2023, claimed the lives of a three-person family from the Silesian region, including a young child.

Allegations Against Sebastian M.

According to investigators, Sebastian M. was driving his BMW on the A1 highway at speeds reaching 315 km/h. His reckless driving appears to be confirmed by recordings from other road users’ cameras. According to the indictment prepared by the Katowice prosecutor’s office, Sebastian M. lost control of his vehicle, swerved into another lane, and collided with a Kia car, which quickly caught fire.

Statement from the Victims’ Family

The process has been controversial from the start, mainly due to the accused who shows no remorse. On Friday, Małgorzata Duda, the mother of Martyna who died with her husband Patryk and their 5-year-old son Oliwier, spoke on behalf of the affected families.

“We decided to speak up, seeing the behavior of the accused and his family… They left without saying goodbye, which was certainly against their will. My child, son-in-law, and beloved only grandson were killed that evening because of the accused’s recklessness and thoughtlessness,” Duda stated.

Defense Controversy: Death in Fire, Not Accident?

Duda also addressed the accused’s defense tactics, responding to the defense attorney’s previous claim that the family died in a fire, not as a result of the car accident.

“We suffer, Mr. Sebastian, not only because of your constant changing of positions, your escape to the United Arab Emirates where you treated yourself to a year-and-a-half of luxury vacations under the pretext of a supposed business trip, or by stating that our children died in a fire, not as a result of a car accident. We suffer primarily because you either don’t understand what happened, or worse, you understand perfectly well but cannot take any responsibility as an adult man,” Duda said.

“We Won’t Win Against Money and Family Connections”

Małgorzata Duda revealed that she had spoken with her daughter by phone minutes before the accident, not realizing it would be their last conversation. “You took from us what we had most precious in life… We also hear that we won’t win against money and family connections. We believe in justice,” she concluded.

Defense Responds: “Prosecution Version is Simply Wrong”

The defense of Sebastian M. responded to the statement from the victims’ families. In an interview with o2.pl, attorney Katarzyna Hebda, representing the accused, stated: “No one questions the families’ pain. This is a great tragedy. The families have been grieving for nearly three years. Words of hatred toward the accused are often spoken in this courtroom, even after hearings end. This does not surprise the accused or the defense. The families have the right to these feelings. However, it is understandable that it is difficult for the victims and parents to accept that the version of the accident defined by investigators is simply wrong.”
